“Well done, good and faithful servant" Matthew 25:21On Sunday, December 29, 2024, the world lost a life lived as a faithful servant. From the son of a peanut farmer to the 39th President of the United States of America to a global humanitarian for so many causes for the poor, hungry, and sick, we all come together in celebration of Jimmy Carter. No political lines or parties define the servant that he was. He did for anyone that he found needed a hand up or help. He lifted a hammer after his presidency, challenged by Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity, at a meeting at his home with his equally socially conscious wife, Rosalynn, by his side. Millard asked the former president to “check boxes on a list of asks” to support Habitat. To the president’s surprise, he said in later years, he checked them all! Millard was convincing with his passion to house those in need. A housing humanitarian, President Carter, and the First Lady launched into 40 years of service building homes during the annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project. From the shores of the Gulf to Canada to Haiti to South Bend, Indiana, they, together, hand in hand, sharing a sweet kiss or two each day, hammered, painted, sawed, and built alongside families and thousands of volunteers. He inspired many. He inspired ME.I was just an elementary school student when Jimmy Carter was elected president. While we had studied presidents and memorized a list of them in order, I didn’t really understand the impact that one person could have on the world. It wasn’t until my high school history class with Mr. Billarakis that I learned the true magnitude of what President Carter did as our 39th president but even more so his servant work in the world. The causes he cared about for those that were sick or to eliminate diseases in other countries also made us more conscious of climate change and what we do each day that changes our environment. I was fortunate a few years ago to attend our national conference and hear President Carter and the First Lady speak to a room of 2,500 Habitat for Humanity staff, board members, volunteers, homeowners, and financial supporters from around the world. As he always did, he spoke a bit and then passed the microphone to his beautiful wife. They together changed the trajectory of housing and the work that each Habitat affiliate does each and every day.Thank you, President Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter. You are both good and faithful servants. May the angels raise their hammers high together in celebration of a life of service and a love that spanned nearly 80 years.- Rochelle Sibbio, President & CEOHabitat for Humanity of Summit County#HonoringCarter #HabitatforHumanity ...
